Not all those who wander are lost

All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

J.R.R. Tolkien

Once upon a time, after I finished my school education in Germany, I had my first job lined up, but had to wait a few weeks before I had to show up for my first day. In the meantime, I continued living with my parents, which gave me an unprecedented blessing: nothing to do!

With no obligation to wake up at a certain hour, my circadian rhythm became to shift to my natural night-owl state: I regularly went to bed at 2am and slept until 10am. Since many of my friends were either still in school or already working their jobs, I had a lot of time for freedom and solitude.

I remember not feeling any sense of loneliness back then. Instead, I took to wandering the streets of my city. The light of the stars and the warm glow of the streetlights kept me company as I walked aimlessly around my neighborhood, exploring new streets and following my daydreams (or, rather, nightdreams?) and ruminations.

It's amazing how few people you run into at 2am at night, even in a big city like mine. The empowering feeling that the city belongs to me and the joy that solitude brings is what I tried to convey with this somber color gradient. For this purpose, Travelers Among the Stars incoporates shades of navy, blue, lavender, light yellow and salmon.
